Nature & Sustainability
The Imbak Canyon Conservation Area (ICCA) is one of Sabah’s most important protected forests, covering over 30,000 hectares of largely undisturbed rainforest. Known as a “rainforest gene bank,” it safeguards rich biodiversity, including rare plants, wildlife, and some of the oldest forest ecosystems in Borneo. Imbak Canyon is managed through a balance of conservation, research, and environmental education. Local communities, especially Indigenous groups living around the area, are engaged in awareness programmes, training, and small-scale tourism opportunities that encourage stewardship of natural resources.
Sustainability in ICCA is practiced through careful visitor management, basic eco-tourism facilities, and support for scientific research that informs forest protection. By limiting human impact and prioritising conservation over mass tourism, ICCA remains a refuge for wildlife and a living classroom for students, researchers, and visitors alike.
Our commitment is simple but firm: to protect the canyon’s rainforest, share knowledge about its importance, and provide opportunities for local communities to benefit from its conservation.
Our conservation efforts focus on protecting this rich natural heritage through habitat preservation, scientific research, and responsible nature recreation. By working closely with researchers, conservation partners, and policy makers, we aim to ensure that Imbak Canyon remains a refuge for wildlife and a source of ecological wonder for future generation.
